sketchbook for charity, page 002

This pen & ink drawing is part of my "Sketchbook for Charity" project. Like many artists, I spend a lot of time drawing in a sketchbook. Until now I haven't done anything with these drawings. Then I realized that through Etsy, I could sell them, and give that money to charity.

When you purchase this drawing, $20 will be donated to First Book, an international nonprofit organization that gives children from low-income families the opportunity to read and own their first new books, and provides a supply of new books to children participating in community-based mentoring, tutoring, and family literacy programs. For more about First Book, visit their website at www.firstbook.org.

This is an original page from my 8 x 5 inch Moleskine watercolor notebook. It comes "as is," meaning untrimmed, and with the perforated edge at the top; I think it would look interesting left this way, as a page, and floated in a frame, but it can be trimmed or matted to have straight edges.

This drawing is priced at $23. $3 is to help me cover the costs of Etsy, Paypal, and supplies. When you pay for this drawing, I will turn right around and donate $20 to First Book via their website. You will be sent a copy of confirmation of this donation with the drawing so that you can be sure your money was indeed donated. $20 is enough to provide EIGHT new books to children in need.

You get a nifty little original drawing, and eight children receive their very own brand new books to read and cherish. How can you lose?

painting on canvas: hummingbird in white on white

A white hummingbird in flight with a cream moon and an eggshell sky.
This is an original painting on canvas, NOT a print.

Media: acrylic and gloss varnish on canvas.
Size: 5 x 5 x 1.5 inches.

This painting is on a gallery profile stretched canvas, 1.5" deep: heavy duty canvas, staple-free edges, tailored corners. No need to frame this piece -- the sides and back are painted as well (the image itself wraps to 3 sides) and it is ready for hanging; it even stands by itself on a table-top or shelf. It is finished with a coat of gloss varnish.

Completed 02.22.07.

abstract miniature painting, no. 006

This miniature abstract painting is an original, handmade work, and one of a kind. The painting is in acrylic and gold leaf on 140 lb Canson watercolor paper. The painting is finished with a protective acrylic gloss varnish. It is affixed to the frame with ph-neutral solvent-free PVA.

The frame is 2-3/8" tall by 2-7/8" wide. The painting is 1-7/8" by 2-3/8" wide. The frame is metal, with raised floral decoration, finished in gold, and considered a 1/12th scale miniature.

You don't need a dollhouse to display one of these paintings: it stands lovely on its own as a tiny work of art, perhaps on a miniature easel.

Completed 02.23.07.

new project: A Week of Haiku

Today I'm embarking upon my second "official" haiku bird project: A Week of Haiku. This will be a series of ACEOs (Art Cards: Editions and Originals), original, one of a kind artist trading cards. ACEOs have one rule -- they must be 3.5 x 2.5 inches in size. Other than that, anything goes. They can be originals or editioned prints. They're traded, or bought and sold, and collected much like other types of trading cards. (I have several that I've completed; click on the ACEO label to see all of those posts.) For more information see this article in wikipedia.

So, the project. Each day I will create an ACEO with an cut-paper assembled haiku. One each day for a week. The week's cards will be cut down from one large collaged / painted background, so the week as a whole will be of the same design. At the end of the week I will have seven cards, which I will package up nicely and sell as a set in my shop on Etsy.

Week One starts today. And over time we'll see how many weeks I continue this project!

little clouds in grays and blue on black night sky

Little zen-style clouds in shades of blue and gray drift through the night sky. Completed 02.08.07.

This is an original drawing, NOT a print.

Media: pen & ink and colored pencil on 140 lb Canson watercolor paper.

Size: image area about 3 x 3 inches, plus a 2 inch border, making the whole thing 7 x 7 inches.

hummingbird and ginger moon on black cherry sky

A hummingbird on a metallic-ginger colored moon with a black-cherry background. Completed 02.07.07.

This is an original mixed-media painting, NOT a print.

Media: pen & ink, acrylic, colored pencil, and metallic iridescent medium on 140 lb Canson watercolor paper.

Size: image area 4 x 4 inches, plus a 2 inch border; total sheet size 8 x 8 inches.

The moon is painted in "unbleached titanium" acrylic, with a top coat of iridescent acrylic medium. In person, the moon is bright and clear, with a light metallic iridescent sheen. Unfortunately, the scanner picks up the metallic particles in the medium and renders them a slightly dingy gray, so the images are not representative of the delicacy of the original.

Media: pen & ink, regular and metallic / iridescent acrylic, and cut paper on 140 lb Canson watercolor paper.

Size: image area 7 x 4 inches, plus a 1.5 inch border.

Media: pen & ink, acrylic, colored pencil, and cut paper on 140 lb Canson watercolor paper.

Size: image area 4.5 x 7.25 inches, plus a 1.5 inch border.

Cut-text poem reads:

guided by thought and reflection

hummingbird in browns on blue

A chocolate-brown and black-cherry hummingbird in flight on a powdery kind-of-slate-blue background. Completed 02.04.07.

This is an original mixed-media painting, NOT a print.

Media: pen & ink, regular and metallic acrylic, colored pencil, and gloss varnish on 140 lb Canson watercolor paper.

Size: 7.125 x 9 inches, including black border.

The black border is 1.25 inches wide and inked by hand with a .5 mm pen -- thus it has subtle "texture" and patterns; prior to the painting the border was sprayed with several extra layers of protective matte fixative which gives it a slight frosted appearance. The blue acrylic plane with the bird is gloss varnished, very rich, and really stands out from the border, creating an interesting dimensional effect.
