two beetles, or, color vs. black and white

This is an original, one-of-a-kind ACEO ("Art Card, Edition and Original").

This work was inspired by Etsy Creative Challenge #44: "This week's challenge is using the spring color chart ... create something using the color lime from the chart. You can pair it with another color from the chart, use it alone, or pair it with whatever color you want." The color chart is a 2007 Spring-Summer color forecast guide used by jewelers.

"But lime isn't in my color palette," I thought. "Lime is out of my comfort zone." And so on.

Hence this piece. I chose something specifically notoriously colorful -- beetles (also a first for me) -- and rendered them in black and white (which is something I am very comfortable doing), and created the color palette on the back with what is "my" palette -- Pantone Chips. The colors I chose in addition to Lime are Petal Pink, Cloud, Silver Cloud, and Cafe au Lait. I think I even got some Imperial Purple in there as well.

you are my songbird, 8 x 10 photograph (stencil street art, oakland)

This photograph was taken on the street in Oakland. What can I say about it? -- it is too beautiful a sentiment to need any more said.

This is an open edition print. It is professionally printed on matte-finish Fuji Crystal Archive paper, that, quoth the lab, "with its 108 year rating ... will last for generations to come." Each print is inspected and approved by me prior to listing, and is signed & dated on the back.

The image itself is about 5.5 x 7, printed on 8 x 10 paper for a nicely-sized white border. It does not need to be matted to be framed, though it can be.

elephbudda, 8 x 10 photograph (elephant buddha shrine)

This photograph was taken through a store window near the Mission District in San Francisco. This small, neglected shrine was just barely visible in a side window at the back of a shop, buried under a towering avalanche of sun-faded plastic-wrapped beckoning "fortune" cats. The shrine may of been of use at one time to the store owners, but I wonder if they even knew it still existed.

sketchbook for charity, page 008

This pen & ink drawing is part of my "Sketchbook for Charity" project. Like many artists, I spend a lot of time drawing in a sketchbook. Until now I haven't done anything with these drawings. Then I realized that through Etsy, I could sell them, and give that money to charity.

When you purchase this drawing, $20 will be donated to First Book, an international nonprofit organization that gives children from low-income families the opportunity to read and own their first new books, and provides a supply of new books to children participating in community-based mentoring, tutoring, and family literacy programs. For more about First Book, visit their website at www.firstbook.org.

This is an original page from my 8 x 5 inch Moleskine watercolor notebook. It comes "as is," meaning untrimmed, and with the perforated edge at the top; I think it would look interesting left this way, as a page, and floated in a frame, but it can be trimmed or matted to have straight edges.

This drawing is priced at $23. $3 is to help me cover the costs of Etsy, Paypal, and supplies. When you pay for this drawing, I will turn right around and donate $20 to First Book via their website. You will be sent a copy of confirmation of this donation with the drawing so that you can be sure your money was indeed donated. $20 is enough to provide EIGHT new books to children in need.

You get a nifty little original drawing, and eight children receive their very own brand new books to read and cherish. How can you lose?

hummingbird in flight (original pencil sketch)

A sketch of a hummingbird in flight, trying to capture the movement of the wings. This is an original drawing, not a print. I wanted to post something a little different, something "in progress," though I would consider it finished. Something that shows process. Something that shows my own movement, not just that of the hummingbird. Some of my buyers have asked about my sketches versus finished drawings. I don't always sketch this much first, but sometimes I do -- and here is one.
Media: pencil on 140 lb Canson watercolor paper. Size: image area approximately 5 x 7 inches; total sheet size 9 x 12 inches. Completed 03.21.07.

six circles collage

Six circles of various media on a canvas painted in dark metallic copper. The canvas was finished with a low-gloss varnish before the circles and wire were applied. Copper wire is used for the "stitching." The entire piece was then sprayed with a flexible, non-yellowing fixative.
Mixed-media including metallic acrylic, pearlescent and iridescent acrylic mediums, cut paper (including an original hand written letter from 1920), copper wire, a postage stamp, bristol board, watercolor paper, and gloss varnish on canvas. Size: 5 x 5 x 1.5 inches. This collage is on a gallery profile stretched canvas, 1.5" deep: heavy duty canvas, staple-free edges, tailored corners. No need to frame this piece -- the sides and back are painted as well (the image itself wraps around to one side) and it is ready for hanging; it even stands by itself on a table-top or shelf. Completed 03.17.07.

etsy showcase, 15 March 2007

If you wonder why I keep posting things like these Etsy showcases and such, it's because this blog is my archive. My repository. My virtual scrapbook. And so on. And so forth.

Plus this one is special, with my first photograph as my main selection.

zebra with horns, 8 x 10 photograph (clarion alley mural, san francisco)

This photograph was taken in Clarion Alley in the Mission District of San Francisco -- a wonderful alley filled from end to end with all kinds of mural projects. This detail features a black, white and blue zebra with horns and a gazelle-like creature, and the bottom of a birdcage. Unfortunately I do not know the name of the artist who created this particular mural.

This is the first photograph to be offered by Haiku Bird...

This is an open edition print. It is professionally printed on matte-finish Fuji Crystal Archive paper, that, quoth the lab, "with its 108 year rating ... will last for generations to come." Each print is inspected and approved by me prior to listing, and is signed & dated on the back.
